James is an experienced ensemble leader and conductor, having worked with orchestras, big bands, choirs, concert bands and mixed ensembles across the UK. James has a particular passion for working with big bands, adult and intergenerational amateur musicians and mixed professional/amateur groups, and is a committed advocate of life-long music-making for all.

James has directed ensembles including East London Community Big Band (including consecutive Gold Awards and Best Instrumentalist Award at the National Concert Band Festival), Jambone, Glasgow University Big Band, Byers Road Community Big Band, the Mackintosh Ensemble, Age of Not Believing Ensemble, the Choir of Churchill College, Cambridge, Orchestra on the Hill and the James Brady Jazz Orchestra. James has directed at venues including the Barbican Centre, Union Chapel and Sage Gateshead.
