Passionately committed to innovative and inclusive approaches to musicianship, James has been working in formal and informal music education environments for more than 15 years. He is currently Lower Brass Tutor at inclusive youth music organisation Orchestras for All and was Founder Director of Jazz at East London Community Band from 2018-2021, and Musicianship Tutor at Saffron Centre for Young Musicians from 2016-2019. He was also previously Composer-in-Residence and later interim Director of Jazz at the Sage Gateshead's Jambone ensemble and has worked with a wide variety of music services including the Tri-Borough Hub, Newham Music Hub and Norfolk Music Education Hub.

James completed a PGCert in Performance Education at the Guildhall (Inclusive Learning Pathway) School of Music and Drama in 2018, receiving a Distinction.

With a reputation for innovative thinking around inclusivity and raising standards, James has worked as a consultant to design music education and ensemble programmes for both young people and adults and professional and non-professional musicians and teachers. Partners include the Music Teachers Association, Music Teacher Magazine, Glasgow University, Orchestras For All, Bedford School for Girls, Saffron Centre for Young Musicians, St Richard Reynolds College and Hockerill Anglo-European School. He has particular interests and expertise in the following areas:

  • Developing and incorporating improvisation for all musicians

  • Arranging for mixed ensembles and mixed abilities

  • Jazz ensembles

  • Brass instruments

  • Musicianship (incorporating music theory)

James welcomes enquires from organisations, institutions and ensembles interested in exploring training, facilitation and programme design.

James is also available for individual tution in brass instruments, music theory, jazz and composing/arranging, online and in person (Glasgow).
